After much excitement and anticipation, the year end points championship race in Sandpoint, ID at Schweitzer Ski Resort has now come and gone. Racers from RMSHA met one final time in Northern Idaho, and were greeted by as much snow on the hillside as they had seen all year. With expectations of a beautiful spring weekend and clear skies, mother nature proved to have other plans in mind. Friday began with heavy rains and slowly turned into wet, heavy snow. The day opened with 800 Mod to start things off and paved the way for fast runs all day long. With less than ideal weather throughout the day, the course held up great and proved to be a great last day of qualifying for the year. With a break in weather overnight and showing up to the hill Saturday with some sunshine trying to burn through, the finals on Saturday were shaping up to be a terrific close to the season. Again, the first class of the day was 800 Mod, and once again proved just how fast the times can be with some of the best riders in the world riding some of the most advanced sleds in the world. Kyle Tapio would just edge out Erin Beukelman off of a tie breaker to claim the first win of the day. Visibility and conditions would remain decent throughout the day, but began taking a turn for the worse as the day drew to a close. At the flip of a switch, the skies began to rain down hail which shortly thereafter turned to a steady downpour of rain. The King of the Hill runs would be enjoyed during a large rainstorm! Justin Thomas was able to put an exclamation point on his tremendous season in the semi-pro ranks and once again claimed the semi-pro King of the Hill. Keith Curtis continued his domination in the stock classes aboard his Polaris and topped the season off with yet another Stock King of the Hill title. Kyle Tapio continued his scorching second half of the season and won his third consecutive Improved Stock King of the Hill aboard his high powered Arctic Cat. And to put the finishing touches on an incredible 2013 race season, Keith Curtis finished the day off and the 2013 race season by claiming the Mod King of the Hill title.
Sled2Sled would like to thank everyone, racers, sponsors and fans, for their support throughout the race season! We look forward to continuing to cover the great circuit of RMSHA and the sport of hillclimb for the 2014 season.
